Compact, confident and characterful, the West Highland Terrier is a small, sturdy breed known for its affectionate yet independent nature and lively, inquisitive behaviour. Westies suit active owners who can provide daily walks, play and mental stimulation; they adapt well to flats if given regular exercise but can be vocal without early training and socialisation. Their weather-resistant coat needs regular brushing and occasional professional grooming or hand-stripping, and routine dental and skin care are important. Consideration of time for exercise, grooming and training will help this terrier thrive in family homes or with single owners.
