The Portuguese Water Dog is a medium-sized, sturdy breed known for intelligence, affection and a lively, sociable nature; they thrive on activity and often enjoy water, making them fine companions for active families who like walks, swims and training. They tend to be eager to please but can be spirited, so consistent, positive training and early socialisation are helpful. Prospective owners should consider their exercise needs, regular grooming for a curly or wavy coat and the space and time required to keep them mentally stimulated, as they are less suited to a sedentary lifestyle or long stretches alone.
