The Swedish Vallhund is a small-to-medium, sturdy herding dog with an alert, affectionate and intelligent temperament; lively and energetic, they enjoy regular exercise, mental stimulation and tasks that give them a job to do. They tend to be good with families when socialised early but can be independent and somewhat vocal, reflecting their working-dog background. Prospective owners should consider their need for daily activity, consistent training and secure outdoor space — they can adapt to town living if thoroughly exercised — as well as routine grooming for their double coat and attention to health checks.
