The Estrela Mountain Dog is a large, calm and loyal livestock guardian with an independent streak; typically gentle with family but naturally wary of strangers, it needs consistent, patient training and early socialisation. Physically robust and moderately active, this breed enjoys daily walks and ample outdoor time rather than constant high‑intensity exercise, and its thick double coat requires regular grooming, especially in seasonal shed. Prospective owners should consider space and a secure garden, realistic time for training and care, and the suitability of a guardian temperament in a household with small animals or very young children.
