The Bergamasco is a medium–large, sturdy herding dog known for a calm, loyal temperament and distinctive matted coat; typically intelligent and steady, they bond closely with family and are sensible around children while retaining protective instincts. They have moderate activity needs — enjoying daily walks and mental stimulation rather than frenetic exercise — so they suit households that can offer regular outings and interaction. Prospective owners should factor in space for a lively dog, time and patience for its unique coat care and grooming, and consistent socialisation and training.
