The Shetland Sheepdog is a small-to-medium, intelligent and affectionate breed known for its alert, loyal nature and lively energy. Shelties are quick learners and form strong bonds with their families, but they retain a busy herding instinct and can be vocal or reserved with strangers. They suit owners prepared to provide daily exercise, mental stimulation and regular grooming for their dense double coat; while they adapt to smaller homes, access to a secure garden and consistent training help keep them happy. Prospective owners should also consider socialisation and routine care needs before committing.
