Basset Hounds are calm, affectionate scent hounds known for their low-slung, sturdy build and gentle, family-friendly temperament. Typically medium-large but heavy-set with short legs, they enjoy leisurely sniffing walks rather than high-intensity exercise, though regular daily activity is important to prevent weight gain and support joint health. They can be stubborn during training and need patient, reward-based guidance; their long, floppy ears and loose skin require routine cleaning and attention to prevent infections. They adapt well to flats if given sufficient outdoor time, but a secure garden is useful because their nose can lead them off.
